Book summary and verdict
Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art
Nestor says we sleep badly because our mouths keep freelancing as noses, so people tape them shut and wake up refreshed. Imagine buying mattresses and supplements, then finding out your body sleeps best when you look like a witness who might talk.
Should you read it?
Read it if you snore, wake up dry-mouthed, or enjoy science conducted by people volunteering for terrible nights of sleep. Skip it if you want every health claim backed by strong evidence. The breathing advice is useful. The larger theory becomes your cousin who fixed his back and now runs Thanksgiving like a clinic.
L.I had considered breathing a settled matter. The advice is simple: use your nose, breathe more slowly, and stop inhaling breakfast as if pursued. Useful advice. Then the nose is promoted to management of the entire body.
The ideas
I · Nose
Breathe through your nose when you can. Your mouth already handles food, lies, and every apology you make worse.
That is the central idea of Breath, and it is almost insulting how little equipment it requires. According to James Nestor, modern humans breathe too quickly and use our mouths too much. You have been breathing since birth without supervision, and now a journalist has arrived to say your technique needs work.
The nose filters, warms, and humidifies incoming air. It also brings nitric oxide into the process before the air reaches your lungs. Your mouth can get air inside you too, but it handles the job with the same care it brings to eating chips over the sink. The air got in. Everybody calm down.
L.The nose is built for breathing. The mouth already has food, lies, and the sentence that ended Thanksgiving.
II · Pace
Slow breathing can calm your nervous system, so naturally you will do it too hard and frighten yourself.

III · Jaws
Our ancestors had magnificent teeth because dinner used to fight back.

IV · Expansion
The evidence says, "This may help." The book hears, "Excellent, we have fixed humanity."

What to actually do
Sit comfortably for three minutes. Close your mouth and breathe gently through your nose, about five seconds in and five seconds out.
Smaller: Let the breath stay quiet. See whether your shoulders drop.
L.Do not force it. Straining to relax is just bullying yourself in a softer voice.
Before bed, check that you can breathe easily through both nostrils. If your nose is blocked, skip the mouth tape.
Smaller: Clear the congestion or speak to a clinician. Do not ask your sleeping body to discover a third airway.
L.Air first. Wellness second.
If nasal breathing feels comfortable, use it while you wind down tonight. No special app, device, or eucalyptus subscription required.
Smaller: The useful experiment costs nothing, which makes it a terrible wellness product.
L.Give them time. Someone will charge monthly for your face.
If you snore loudly, gasp, choke, or stop breathing during sleep, arrange a proper sleep evaluation instead of taping your mouth.
Smaller: Mouth tape cannot replace a sleep study or CPAP treatment.
L.A collapsing airway is not an arts-and-crafts problem. Do not fight sleep apnea with stationery.
