Book summary and verdict

Good Energy

by Casey Means with Calley Means · 2024 · 400 pages

Casey Means says bad metabolism sits beneath a pile of modern illness, so eat real food, sleep, walk, and watch your glucose. It’s sensible, until breakfast has metrics and you realize you’ve become the unpaid manager of your own pancreas.

Should you read it?

Read it if your current health plan is coffee followed by concern. Keep the walks, sleep, real food, and basic blood tests. When metabolism becomes the suspect in every unsolved case, stop taking notes.

L.The book argues that many common illnesses begin when the body gets bad at turning food into usable energy. The prescription is vegetables, sleep, walking, sunlight, and tracking blood sugar until you are the least relaxed person ever to eat oatmeal.

The ideas

I · Metabolism

Before you investigate your childhood, eat something. You may not hate your life. You may need toast.

The basic idea of Good Energy is that a lot of modern illness begins in the same place: your cells are exhausted, confused, and barely holding their lives together. They are like a divorced man whose refrigerator contains mustard, batteries, and one wet lime.

Casey Means argues that when our cells struggle to make energy, the damage can show up as depression, infertility, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, or cancer, which is horrifying because apparently the entire human body is running off one outlet, and I’m the idiot kicking the cord.

One cellular problem behind many diseases is appealing because you can replace six separate medical fears with one master fear. Doctors call that an unproven theory. Worriers call it finally getting organized.

L.The research says maybe. The supplement aisle heard absolutely.

II · Inputs

Junk food tastes like a reward because your mouth gets paid upfront. The rest of your body discovers the loan terms later.

III · Signals

Blood tests are awkward because apparently the body kept records.

IV · Overreach

One important thing is still only one thing, no matter how many times you say “mitochondria” with a concerned expression.

What to actually do

Walk for ten minutes after dinner.

Smaller: One lap. No four-week metabolic rebirth. Just see whether your head, your energy, or your evening feels different.

L.You need one habit that can survive contact with Wednesday.

Put protein and fiber in tomorrow’s breakfast.

Smaller: Add eggs, yogurt, beans, nuts, seeds, or fruit, and choose something you will actually eat. You are making breakfast, not defending a thesis about chia seeds.

L.The goal is to stop eating crackers over the sink at 10:30.

Go outside after you wake up.

Smaller: Get a few minutes of morning light before your phone hands you twelve problems belonging to strangers who need you furious before coffee.

L.They will remain terrible without you.

Replace one ultra-processed staple tonight.

Smaller: Choose the thing you eat constantly and swap it for something that still looks like food. One thing. Do not throw out the oatmeal or begin interrogating receipts.

L.Your organs would like dinner, not a manifesto.

Look at the basic numbers from your last physical before buying a new machine.

Smaller: Fasting glucose, triglycerides, HDL, A1C, blood pressure, and waist circumference are a sensible place to start. If something concerns you, take it to an actual clinician.

L.Do not pay a monthly fee to be afraid of fruit. You did not discover your metabolism. You made guilt wireless.
