How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease

by Michael Greger with Gene Stone · 2015 · 576 pages

Greger says plants can delay the diseases killing us, which is great news until dinner, when you discover you weren’t confused about nutrition. You knew the beans were there. You just had a day, and the cheeseburger never asked you to improve.

Should you read it?

Yes, especially if your health plan is buying spinach and letting it become soup in the drawer. This gives you specific foods and a simple daily checklist. Use it, but keep your head. A better diet can lower your risk. It cannot make death lose your address.

L.The useful advice is simple: more beans, berries, greens, and whole grains may lower the risk of several major diseases. The daily checklist turns that advice into groceries and exposes exactly what you forgot. At 9 p.m. I still owed it beans, so I ate chickpeas over the sink like a man settling a gambling debt.

The ideas

I · Plants

If your dinner has a mascot and a legal department, put it back.

The book wants more beans, berries, greens, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, and less meat and factory-made junk. We have somehow reached a point where eating an apple feels extreme, but inhaling a fried cylinder from a gas station is just a busy Tuesday.

Most people already know vegetables are good. The problem is that the bacon cheeseburger has a marketing department, while the bean has been sitting quietly in a can since 2019. Greger makes the bean competitive.

L.There is no portion limit. Your largest bowl just became a loophole.

II · Disease

The book tours your organs like a landlord discovering what you did to the flat.

The rest of this idea is in the app.

III · Checklist

A daily checklist of healthy foods, because grown adults need a chore chart for berries.

The rest of this idea is in the app.

IV · Certainty

A citation is a lab coat for a sentence. Sometimes there is a doctor inside, sometimes just a man selling cinnamon.

What to actually do

Tonight, add one serving of beans and one green vegetable to whatever you were already going to eat.

Smaller: Put lentils in the sauce. Add spinach to the rice. Heat frozen broccoli and season it with garlic, salt, and lemon.

L.If it tastes like a wet bath mat, that is not discipline. You cooked badly.

Stir frozen berries and a tablespoon of ground flaxseed into oatmeal or yogurt at breakfast.

Smaller: Try it for a week, then adjust the fruit, sweetness, or texture until you will actually eat it again.

L.Any breakfast that requires a pep talk before sunrise has failed.

Before the pizza or chips, eat something filling made from plants, such as beans, whole grains, nuts, or vegetables.

Smaller: Then eat whatever you still want. Hunger makes terrible decisions, which explains gas-station food and several pizzas I have called “personal.”

L.“Personal” is a portion size and an alibi.

If you move toward a mostly plant-based diet, take vitamin B12 seriously and keep taking medication that helps you.

Smaller: If you use diabetes medication, blood thinners, or medicines affected by potassium, vitamin K, or major diet changes, talk to a qualified clinician before rebuilding the fridge.

L.Your body is not reviewing your character. It is a wet machine assembled without instructions.
