Book summary and verdict

Life in Three Dimensions

by Shigehiro Oishi · 2025 · 272 pages

Oishi says happiness and meaning are not enough, because apparently a good life also needs confusion, discomfort, and one humiliating surprise that changes your mind. Great. I’ve been calling that a terrible year. Turns out I was thriving.

Should you read it?

Read it if your life is stable, purposeful, and beginning to resemble a very competent waiting room. The core idea is useful, especially in its small, cheap, reversible form. Once the case studies start arriving in matching outfits, you may leave.

L.Feeling good is one kind of good life, and having a purpose is another. Doing unfamiliar things can also improve you, even while ruining the afternoon. Your canceled flight is now personal growth. Do not expect points.

The ideas

I · Happiness

A happy day goes as planned. An interesting day ends with you eating crackers over the sink, thinking, “Well, now I know why people leave me.”

For years, psychologists mostly gave us two versions of a good life. The first was happiness: comfort, pleasure, safety, people you love, and a home where nothing has started making a noise you cannot afford.

Happiness is great, obviously, but if it is your only proof that life is going well, one anxious afternoon becomes a full investigation. You skipped lunch, the printer jammed, and suddenly your childhood is under oath.

L.You are a mammal with a mortgage. You are going to have moods.

A happy day is sleep, lunch, work, and nobody telling you what you are like. A full life includes hearing it, denying it, and spending the drive home realizing the bastard had examples.

II · Meaning

Meaning answers, “Why am I doing this?” It does not guarantee that the answer is sane.

III · Richness

A new experience can wreck an old belief so fast you start calling it growth, because “I confidently talked nonsense for six years” sounds worse.

IV · Perspective

An experience does not have to be dramatic to change you. Sometimes a cashier says, “You come in a lot,” and the frozen burritos become a cry for help.

V · Balance

Happiness is enjoying dinner. Meaning is feeding your family. Psychological richness is ordering something you cannot pronounce and monitoring your throat through dessert.

What to actually do

Tonight, do one thing that is unusual for you. Keep it cheap, reversible, and below the level where your family has to identify you on the local news.

Smaller: Order an unfamiliar dish, enter a shop you always pass, or take a different route home.

L.You are seeking perspective. Not a documentary crew.

Read one essay or watch one talk by someone you are certain is an idiot. Stay until you can explain the real point without adding a stupid voice.

Smaller: If you still disagree, fine. Now you are annoyed with better information.

L.Changing your mind counts. So does retiring the stupid voice.

Go somewhere you normally ignore. Try a local match, tiny gallery, public talk, open rehearsal, or community event that sounds a little embarrassing.

Smaller: Choose the one that makes you say, "Not really my thing." Your thing has had years and mostly bought cushions.

L.Stay for an hour. See what gets through.

Afterward, ask one question: What got rearranged in my head? A person, a place, a skill, or your heroic belief that calligraphy looked easy.

Smaller: The answer can be tiny. Maybe your hands are apparently stupid. That still counts.

L.No journal required. One honest sentence will do.
