Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

by Susan Cain · 2012 · 333 pages

Susan Cain says introverts aren’t broken, they’re just tired from watching confidence get promoted over competence. So if you’ve ever stayed silent while a man discovered your idea out loud, congratulations. You weren’t shy. You were at work.

Should you read it?

Read it if noise drains you, meetings reward whoever speaks before thinking, or you manage someone quiet. Skip it if you already give people time to answer. If you ask for ideas and answer yourself four seconds later, you did not hire a team. You hired witnesses.

L.I do not hate people. I hate hearing an opinion while it is still being assembled. Some people recharge alone. Others call a meeting to ask why nobody is talking. An open office is very collaborative. I know everyone's lunch order and nobody's job.

The ideas

I · Temperament

Everybody was just too many people.

Shyness is worrying people will judge you. Introversion is realizing they like you, which is nice, and then realizing this means they may stay.

An introvert can enjoy a party. They might even be the funniest person there. Then they go home and lie completely still for four hours because somebody introduced them to seventeen cousins.

An extrovert can talk to strangers for four hours and leave wondering where everybody is going next. An introvert can have the exact same night, laugh, tell stories, meet lovely people, and then go home and sit in the dark with their coat still on because taking it off feels like one more event.

L.You enjoyed everybody. Everybody was the problem.

II · Performance

Some people think before they speak. I like to discover my opinion with everyone else.

III · Recovery

They are paying you partly in money and partly in unwanted conversation.

IV · Collaboration

Speaking first is not leadership. Sometimes it is just panic with eye contact.

What to actually do

Protect one quiet break tonight. Close a door, take a walk without headphones, or eat alone without explaining your face to anybody.

Smaller: Pick the recovery you keep skipping.

L.Do it before one harmless question makes you resent the invention of family.

Before your next meeting, write down what you actually think. Otherwise, the first confident person will define the conversation, and everybody else will spend forty minutes rearranging his mistake.

Smaller: One idea, pre-loaded. Send it in the chat if the room never pauses.

L.Stop letting the first mouth win by default.

When harmless people start feeling extremely harmful, step away for ten minutes.

Smaller: Sit somewhere quiet until you can hear somebody chewing without drafting a criminal charge.

L.Then come back. Keep the friendships. They are exhausting to replace.

If you are raising a quiet child, offer one low-stakes invitation and let them decline. Do not fill the house with forty strangers and then act betrayed when they disappear.

Smaller: The shell is not a medical emergency. It is where they keep all their functioning organs.

L.Leave the shell alone.

Look at tomorrow and remove one unnecessary performance. Skip the optional call, move one conversation to text, or take lunch somewhere Brent cannot explain cryptocurrency.

Smaller: Stretch for what matters. Recover without apologizing.

L.Everybody was just too many people.
