The Total Money Makeover

by Dave Ramsey · 2003 · 240 pages

Dave Ramsey says the math is easy, and unfortunately you are the difficult part. Save some cash, kill the smallest debt, and stop calling a new truck an emergency because the old one no longer understands you.

Should you read it?

Read it if debt keeps surviving every budget you lovingly color-code. Skip it if you already pay cards in full and invest cheaply, unless you enjoy being yelled at by a man who thinks the stock market gives twelve percent for good behavior.

L.Save some emergency cash, clear each debt, then invest steadily. Sensible. I had been alternating dread with small purchases.

The ideas

I · Behavior

Knowing how interest works does not stop a grown adult from financing a couch because he had a hard week and apparently sadness needs cup holders.

Spend less. Save more. Avoid paying twenty-seven percent interest on a sandwich you ate in February. Everybody understands this, right up until Wednesday at 7:20, when a delivery app offers to bring you a fourteen-dollar sandwich from a building you can see.

We get bored. We get jealous. We have one bad Tuesday, and suddenly Amazon is bringing us a foot massager, an air fryer, and a small decorative ladder. Ramsey’s real subject is not compound interest. It is the person holding the credit card.

L.The couch was on sale. The money was not there. The card said, "Close enough."

II · Order

When six bills are staring at you, a master plan is insulting. Pick one. The others already know where you live.

The rest of this idea is in the app.

III · Momentum

A perfect budget assumes every purchase will be made by your calmest self. That person never shops. He just appears afterward, holding the receipt like evidence.

The rest of this idea is in the app.

IV · Protection

An emergency fund turns "the furnace died" into "that's annoying." Without one, the furnace has also killed Christmas.

What to actually do

Open your notes app. List every debt except the mortgage, with its balance, minimum payment, and interest rate.

Smaller: Do not purchase a special notebook so beautiful that you become afraid to write in it.

L.You know what numbers look like. Go find yours.

Choose one debt. Pick the smallest balance for a quick win, or the highest interest rate to save more. Make one extra payment tonight.

Smaller: Do it before you open fourteen tabs to decide which method suits your personality.

L.Your credit card has never asked about your personality. Send the money.

Before paying extra on debt, move whatever you can spare into a separate emergency account, even if it is only $100.

Smaller: That money is for the mechanic who says, “Come back here, I want to show you something,” which is never followed by a compliment.

L.Build the cushion. Then attack the debt.

Cancel one expense you will not miss tomorrow. Start with the subscription you forgot existed, not food, medicine, or the last fragile pleasure holding your household together.

Smaller: Put the freed money toward your chosen debt immediately, before it becomes a medically necessary tiny luxury.

L.One cancellation. Not a personality transplant.

Tell anyone who shares your money the actual number and the first target. “We owe $430 on this card, and we are killing it first” is a plan. “We should be better with money” is Christmas criticism from an uncle.

Smaller: Keep the conversation to one debt and one next move. No five-year summit tonight.

L.Specific beats inspiring. Especially after dinner.
