Book summary and verdict

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

by Anne Lamott · 1994 · 240 pages

You want to write, so naturally you reorganize your files and become an expert on buttons. Lamott says make one ugly little thing, then another, because publication won't fix you. It just gives your panic a sales ranking.

Should you read it?

Read it if you prepare to write with the focus of a surgeon and the output of a houseplant. Skip it if you need help with plot, character, or structure. This gets you into the pool. It does not make you look good in a bathing suit.

L.I wrote before I felt ready. It felt terrible. This was indistinguishable from being ready.

The ideas

I · Scale

Write the next small piece. The whole project is how your brain talks you into faking a medical emergency.

A boy ignored his school report about birds until the night before it was due, so his father told him to take it bird by bird, because parenting is watching someone manufacture a crisis and then promote you to management.

That is the central move. Do not write the novel. Write the argument in the kitchen. Do not write your memoir. Write the moment your mother threw a plate at the wall and then calmly asked if anybody wanted pie.

Lamott’s one-inch picture frame does the same job. Write only what could fit inside it. One moment. One description. One exchange. One memory. Because “write a book” is not an action. It is a threat.

Your brain wants total victory or a medically convincing excuse to do nothing. Small progress is insulting. There is no drama in it. Nobody comes running into the room because you wrote a usable paragraph.

L.Make the job smaller. Panic always orders family size.

II · Drafts

Your first draft may be garbage. Relax, garbage is at least something the truck can pick up.

III · Permission

The first draft may be appalling. Nobody has seen it except you, and you have already forgiven yourself for much worse.

IV · Success

You can become a professional and still panic like an amateur. Now the panic has your tax information.

V · Jealousy

A jealous thought is human. A twelve-part public thread is evidence.

What to actually do

Open the document you have been avoiding. Find the next visible moment and write it for twenty minutes.

Smaller: Not the whole novel. Write the argument in the kitchen, the woman stepping onto the porch, or the father receiving the phone call.

L.Because “write a book” is not an action. It is a threat.

Let the first draft be bad enough to exist.

Smaller: If the dialogue sounds like two customer-service chatbots discussing a divorce, keep going. You can repair it later.

L.Quality control requires a product. The characters can survive one bad evening.

When a fact is missing, leave a bracketed note and keep drafting.

Smaller: Write "[CHECK HOW LONG A DIVORCE TAKES IN OHIO]" and finish the scene.

L.Research it later. Your browser has never returned you to the sentence voluntarily.

Do not reread from the beginning every time you sit down.

Smaller: Start where you stopped.

L.Otherwise, forty minutes later, you have changed "small" to "little" and back again. The unwritten ending has noticed no improvement.

Set a ten-minute timer and write one deliberately bad paragraph.

Smaller: When it rings, stop or keep going. Both count.

L.Read it tomorrow. You now have something concrete to hate, which is how editing begins.
