The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life
Suleika Jaouad gives you a hundred ways into the blank page, and some are profound, some are exhausting, but all of them ruin the lovely arrangement where you buy journals, hide from yourself, and call it growth.
Should you read it?
Read it if you want to journal but freeze without a prompt, especially through grief, illness, or change. Skip it if you already have a practice or cannot face mortality before breakfast. The essays are uneven, but the questions do the useful work.
L.Suleika Jaouad gives you a short essay and a prompt each day, so the blank page no longer gets to conduct the interview. I tried it and discovered that honesty is much easier when someone else goes first. Then I made coffee and resumed lying normally.
The ideas
I · Entry
“One person tells the truth, and suddenly every ‘I’m fine’ in the room sounds like an alibi from a man holding the shovel.”
You read someone else being honest, then answer one specific question about yourself. “Tell me who you are” gets my ZIP code. “When were you jealous?” gets dates, witnesses, and Denise’s exact sweater.
Ask me what I feel and I need a snack. Let me read somebody else’s confession and suddenly I have a response, a memory, and somehow a grievance.
L.They admitted the embarrassing part. Your turn. Try not to make it flattering.
II · Privacy
“Your notebook is private. Stop writing like a lawyer will read it aloud while your mother watches.”

III · Practice
“The secret is doing it again tomorrow, which is offensive because tomorrow was supposed to be when you became naturally gifted.”

IV · Permission
“Use the question that gets you writing. If ‘What is my deepest truth?’ produces nothing, try ‘Why did I say interesting like that?’”

What to actually do
Take a notebook you already own, preferably the good one you have been saving for the wiser person you are definitely becoming.
Smaller: Set a timer for ten minutes. Do not buy special pens, light a candle, or create an Instagram account called “My Alchemy Journey.”
L.You are not building a monastery. You are avoiding a paragraph.
Write at the top: “What would I say if nobody could ever read this?” Then say it.
Smaller: Give yourself three honest sentences. Continue only if you want to.
L.Tear it up afterward if privacy helps. Not every feeling needs to become evidence in a future family argument.
Read one short, honest passage by somebody else. Use one sentence to start your own entry.
Smaller: Continue with whatever it makes you want to admit.
L.Write for ten minutes without editing or trying to sound wise. The second you start managing your image, your diary becomes a press conference.
If a prompt does nothing for you, replace it. Write about the thought that keeps returning, the conversation you keep replaying, or what hurt your feelings on Tuesday.
Smaller: Printed instructions become very powerful around adults who ignore medication labels and parking signs.
L.You are holding the pen. That is the entire chain of command.
Stop when you have one honest sentence. Close the notebook and continue living your life as though nothing happened.
Smaller: By lunch, somebody will send a “gentle reminder,” and you will be normal again.
L.No transformation required tonight. One true sentence counts.
